Girls Education in Print Media (August, 2002-January, 2003)
Education Journalists' Group conducted girl's education program in 4 districts of Nepal viz. Saptari, Kavre, Kapilbastu, and Dadeldhura, in co-operation with UNICEF. The study showed that girl's education issues were less prioritized in media before starting the program before EJG launched its program. After the program started, the number of news published about girls education increased. Poverty, lack of consciousness of parents, lack of female teacher, unemployment, Maoist problem etc were the causes of low situation of girl's education. The study found people becoming conscious to send their daughter to school after EJG launched its program.
Which issues of girl's education were raised by media? What is the frequency of the news? Which newspaper gave priority to girl's education? What kind of messages was given by published materials? What kind of change was seen after the program ? The study has attempted to give answer of these questions.
