48,700 school teacherseats yet to be filled

The government has recruited a total of 13,300 school level teachers in the current academic year whereas more than 62,000 teachers were needed to fulfil the vacancies in the education sector, Director General of Education Department Janardhan Nepal said Friday.

Speaking at an interaction organised by Education Journalists’ Group, he said that the Ministry of Education launched the enrollment campaign with a view to enroll students who are deprived of basic education. More than 3,50,000 school-aged children are still out of school, he said

He said that education department was planning to conduct extra classes in the schools, which have been running alternative education programes. He added that the teachers involved in the additional teaching activities would get extra benefits.

Rudhahari Bhandari, an official at the District Education Office in Kathmandu said that the District Education office said that many schools were not able to enroll adequate students due to the lack of classrooms.

Chairman of National Teacher Organisation Hira Prasad Neupane said that students should be provided the viable environment to achieve the target. He said that the government would follow adjustment policy to manage the shortage of teachers’.

He said that the government would coordinate with the stakeholders, education department, teacher’s representative and parent’s forum while formulating a new policy.

The government should recruit additional teachers and develop infrastructure for the newly enrolled students, he added. He said that the government should organise awareness campaigns about the importance of education.

Dhanajya Sharma Adhikari, principal of Gyanodaya Higher Secondary School said that the government schools were facing problems as they did not have adequate classrooms, necessary physical infrastructure and teachers.

It is necessary to manage the physical infrastructure including school building, library materials, furniture and sports materials, he added.

He urged that the education department should help create educational environment in the schools and they should strengthen monitoring systems.

The government and education department should create a good investment environment for the development of the education sector, he said.
